Lately I listen to a great deal of National Public Radio. From the war in Iraq to climate change, incomprehensible and momentous events are unfolding as I work day after day in my Boston studio. These Brain Terrain drawings are an intuitive response to the bombardment of information in contemporary life. My recent paintings and drawings chart states of mind: thinking, waking, and dreaming. I'm interested in how experience is translated into thought, how memories are layered, and how dreams jumble reality. Cartography and abstraction are two languages used in my work. World events, anatomy, architecture, and nature play parts in these metaphorical maps. |
